FBA Profit Calculator for Beauty Products: The 8% / 15% Tier Trap
$9.99 pays $0.80 in referral. $10.01 pays $1.50. Same jar, same cost, same box — two cents of price, nearly double the fee. Beauty has the most punishing tier boundary on Amazon, and almost nobody prices around it on purpose.

The switch bites the whole price, not the excess. So you have two safe zones: at or under $10, or comfortably above it. The dead zone is $10.01–$12, where the extra revenue barely covers the doubled percentage.

Two beauty-specific warnings
Returns run hot. Model 8–10% as a baseline, higher for shades and fragrances that are hard to match online. Each return refunds referral plus fulfillment plus processing — that is the $1.10 line above.
Storage is rarely beauty's problem; turnover is. A small box stored 60 days costs $0.04; slow shade variants linger and pay $2.40/ft³ through Q4. Price per SKU, not per product line — a six-color line strands its weakest shades while the popular ones stock out.
Compliance hides in landed cost. SPF claims and aerosols can trigger regulated or hazmat review, and marketplace-specific labeling forces a relabeling pass. Confirm classification before the first order, and build any relabeling cost into the cost field.
Pricing rule: if you cannot beat $10 with margin to spare, jump well above it. $14.99 pays only $0.75 more referral than $9.99 but sits on a much larger revenue base. See the beauty fee guide for the full compliance and assortment cost section.
Test your price against the tier
Pick the beauty category and the calculator applies the 8%/15% whole-price tier automatically, then solves your break-even:
Why does beauty referral fee double between $9.99 and $10.01?
Because the tier switch applies to the whole price, not just the excess. Beauty pays 8% at or below $10 and 15% above it — so a $9.99 item pays $0.80 referral while a $10.01 item pays $1.50. Two cents of price, nearly double the fee.
