Break-even price: $18.00. Notice the return line ($3.58) is nearly as large as the referral fee ($4.25) and larger than fulfillment — apparel's margin killer is not Amazon, it is the 25% refund rate.
1. Pack to kill dimensional weight. Clothing is light but boxes are big, and the bigger number wins. A 10 oz tee shipped in a 12 × 10 × 4 in box is 480 ÷ 139 = 3.45 lb billable weight — it lands in the 3 lb+ band and pays roughly $2.70 more fulfillment than the tight-pack equivalent. Folded into a 8 × 6 × 1 in poly-bag-safe box, the same tee drops to under 0.5 lb and charges at the bottom band. That one packing change is worth more than most discount codes you will ever run. ⚡ Try this case live
2. Watch both referral thresholds, not just $20. Clothing tiers are 5% up to $15, 10% from $15.01 to $20, 17% above $20. The $15 boundary is the one sellers forget: a $14.99 garment pays $0.75 referral while a $15.00 garment pays $1.50 — a penny of price doubles the fee. Pricing strategies that sit within a cent of either threshold need a conscious reason to be there.
3. Seasonal and size-run trade-offs. Heavy winter coats risk bulky-tier fees and long storage months; summer basics sell thin and fast. A size run (XS–XL) that sells unevenly leaves stranded stock eating storage at the off-peak rate — and at 3× the peak rate if it survives to Q4. Model the sell-through you actually expect per size, not the blended average, and let the calculator's storage line show what a slow size costs per unit.
Pick the clothing category and the calculator applies the 5%/10%/17% tier automatically, with the 25% category return rate amortized into profit. Enter price, cost, dimensions and ads to see net profit, margin and break-even.

Clothing referral fees are tiered: 5% up to $15, 10% from $15.01 to $20, and 17% above $20. A $25 garment pays 17% × $25 = $4.25, and a price within a cent of $15 or $20 flips the tier on the whole price.
Apparel return rates run 20–30% — the highest of any category. On the worked $25 example, return amortization at 25% is $3.58 per unit, nearly as much as the $4.25 referral fee and more than fulfillment.
Yes, but margins are thinner than most categories. A $25 garment with $6 landed cost and 10% ads nets about $3.23 (12.9%) after a 17% referral and 25% return amortization. Brands win on volume, size-run optimization and lower return rates.
Sizing is the main driver: fit uncertainty, between-size customers and free-return habits push apparel to 20–30% versus 5–8% for home products. Accurate size charts, model measurements and consistent QC are the levers that move it.
Model the 17% top referral tier and the category return rate before pricing. Use the clothing category in the FBA Calcs calculator: it applies the tier, amortizes returns, and solves the break-even price — pricing below it loses money on every unit.
The $20 boundary: 10% up to $20.00, 17% above $20.00. A $19.99 garment pays $2.00 referral; at $20.01 it pays $3.40 — pricing just under the threshold saves $1.40 per unit.
